Cowgirl Soccer: Looking Back & Ahead

October 26, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer

Oklahoma State split a pair of home matches over the weekend, dropping a 2-1 overtime contest to No. 2 West Virginia before knocking off Kansas, 2-0, on Sunday. Heading into Friday's regular season finale at Oklahoma, the Cowgirls are 9-7-2 overall and in seventh place in the Big 12 Conference standings with a 2-3-2 league mark.

Weekend Highlights
  • OSU pushed No. 2 West Virginia, who entered the game on a 14-match unbeaten streak, to overtime before falling on a golden goal in the 94th minute. It marked just the third time this season an opponent has taken the Mountaineers to overtime as they improved to 15-1-1 on the year.
  • Sophomore Niki McKnight recorded her first-career goal against West Virginia to tie the game at 1-1 in the 71st minute. The goal is one of only five allowed by the Mountaineers this season.
  • OSU took a lead just 1:21 into Sunday's match against Kansas when Madison Mercado took a pass from Courtney Dike and delivered her fourth goal of the season. A senior, Mercado has scored at least four goals in each of her four seasons with the Cowgirls.
  • Dike's assist was her seventh of the season, the most by a Cowgirl since Mercado had seven in 2013. She's also one assist shy of cracking OSU's top 10 list for assists in a season.
  • McKnight collected her second goal in as many games when she scored in the 44th minute against the Jayhawks.
  • Goalie Michela Ongaro recorded three saves against Kansas en route to picking up her fifth shutout of the season.

Stat Speak
  • Through 18 games this season, OSU has recorded 34 goals and 23 assists. In 21 games in 2014, the Cowgirls had 22 goals and 15 assists.
  • Fourteen different OSU players have scored goals this season, with six of those recording three or more. Nine different Cowgirls have collected assists.
  • OSU ranks second in the Big 12 in goals (34), shots (304) and corner kicks (107).
  • Of OSU's 304 shots this season, 126 have been on goal for a .431 shots on goal percentage; its opponents own a .323 shots on goal percentage.
  • Courtney Dike ranks in the top 10 in the Big 12 in goals (tied for 7th with five), assists (tied for 2nd with seven) and points (tied for 5th with 17). She is also sixth with 48 shots.
  • With 14 career assists, Dike needs just one more to move into the top 10 on OSU's all-time list. She is already tied for 10th all time with 21 goals and is also only four points shy of entering the top 10 in that category.
  • Allie Stephenson is seventh in the Big 12 this season with 47 shots, and she ranks third on OSU's career shots list with 214, trailing only Siera Strawser (283) and Yolanda Odenyo (245).
  • Michela Ongaro ranks sixth on OSU's career shutouts list with nine, and with 104 saves, she is one of only six Cowgirl keepers to surpass the century mark in her career. Her current goals against average of 0.98 is fourth on the program's all-time list.
  • In the latest official NCAA RPI released today, OSU checks in at No. 65, jumping 20 spots from last week.

Stars Of The Weekend
Playing in just her fourth and fifth games of the season, Niki McKnight recorded goals against both West Virginia and Kansas to lead the Cowgirls' attack. Christina Jean-Charles showcased her versatility by playing right back against WVU before moving to defensive midfielder against KU and locking down Jayhawk star Liana Salazar. Kelsey Bass was also outstanding from her left back spot and played all 184 minutes on the weekend.
