Hancock Assumes SWA Duties At Oklahoma State

July 29, 2015 | General, Cowgirl Soccer

STILLWATER, Okla. — Karen Hancock, who served as the first head coach in the history of Oklahoma State University women's soccer, has been named the school's Senior Woman Administrator (SWA), OSU Director of Athletics Mike Holder has announced.

"I believe Karen's 20 years of coaching experience here at Oklahoma State will be invaluable in her new role," Holder said. "I appreciate her willingness to accept more responsibility, and I expect her to do a great job."

Hancock replaces outgoing SWA Joel Atkins, who departed OSU Athletics due to a family relocation to Colorado.

"I am honored to be named the new SWA at Oklahoma State, and I appreciate the trust Coach Holder has placed in me to take on the responsibilities that come with the position," Hancock said. "My love and loyalty for Oklahoma State runs deep, and I look forward to doing my part for the administrative team."

Now serving as a Cowgirl soccer assistant coach, Hancock is a graduate of Tulsa, where she was a four-year starter for the Golden Hurricane soccer team. She was a three-year captain and was twice named TU's most inspirational player. She earned a degree in speech pathology from Tulsa in 1990.

Hancock began her coaching career at Tulsa's Bishop Kelley High School before becoming an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, where she earned a master's degree in secondary education.

From UALR, Hancock became the first head coach in the history of South Alabama women's soccer, leading the program to a 21-13-2 record in two seasons before being named head coach at Oklahoma State in 1996.

Hancock compiled a record of 110-89-19 in 11 seasons as the head coach of the Cowgirls and helped OSU soccer grow from its infancy into a national power. She served two of those seasons (2005-06) as a co-head coach along with Colin Carmichael before assuming duties as an assistant coach in order to spend more time with her daughter, Andrea.

Under Hancock and Carmichael, Oklahoma State has become one of the nation's top soccer programs, climbing to as high as No. 2 in the national rankings and twice reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
